What is BS IEC 62888- Railway applications about?

BS IEC 62888 is a series of international standards on railway vehicles that specifies the specific requirements for energy measurement systems (EMS) to be used for benchmarking, daily energy consumption monitoring, technical research, and development.

BS IEC 628886 is the sixth part of the BS IEC 62888 series of documents that provides the requirements for monitoring consumed energy on board in daily services in an easy way and the measured data are applicable for general purposes in the industry such as energy management, energy-saving, etc.

NOTE: However, BS IEC 628886 is not applicable for billing purposes.

The practical purposes in industrial fields are, e.g.:

  • Monitoring daily energy consumption of vehicles
  • Obtaining data on influential factors, such as operational commands and surrounding conditions, in order to analyse relations between operations and energy
  • Energy management of power flow between vehicles and fixed installations
  • Implementing investigation tests of research and development for vehicle systems
  • Energy cost forecasting for analysing overall efficiency and consumption.

Who is BS IEC 62888- Railway applications for?

BS IEC 628886:2019 on energy measurement onboard trains is relevant to:

  • Railway engineers
  • Electrical engineers
  • Manufacturers of railway electric traction equipment

Why should you use BS IEC 62888- Railway applications

The Energy Measurement System (EMS) provides measurement and data suitable for applications such as energy management, energy-saving, and others.

BS IEC 628886 uses the functional approach to describe the EMS that is divided into six parts.

BS IEC 628886 provides system-level requirements for the complete EMS and common requirements for all devices implementing one or more functions of the EMS.

BS IEC 628886 specifies energy measurement function (EMF) that provides the measurement of the consumed and regenerated active energy of a traction unit.

BS IEC 628886 navigates you through the data handling system (DHS) that defines the conformance test of the DHS.

BS IEC 628886 gives requirements and guidance regarding the data between the functions implemented within EMS as well as between such functions and other onboard units.

Moreover, BS IEC 628886 could assist you in meeting the requirements for monitoring consumed energy on-board in daily services in an easy way and the energy measured data could be useful in applying for general purposes in the industry such as energy management, energy-saving, etc.
