What is BS EN 50463-4 - Communication for energy management systems about?

BS EN 50463 is a European standard that discusses railway applications. BS EN 50463-4 provides the best industry guidance on communication on energy measurement on board trains to minimize the barriers in communication.

BS EN 50463-4 applies to the on board and on board to ground communication services I.e.it covers the data communication using digital interfaces:

  • Between functions implemented within the EMS
  • Between EMS function and other on board subsystems
  • Between EMS and ground communication services

on board to ground communication services cover the wireless data communication between the DHS and the on ground server.

Under BS EN 50463-4 the on board data communication services of the EMS cover the data exchange between functions of the EMS and the data exchange between EMS and other on board units, where data are exchanged using a communications protocol stack over a dedicated physical interface or a shared communication network.

Who is BS EN 50463-4 - Communication for energy management systems for?

BS EN 50463-4 on the communication for energy management systems is useful for:

  • Personnel or technical staff for communication services
  • Regulatory authorities

Why should you use BS EN 50463-4 - Communication for energy management systems?

The on board data communication services of the EMS cover the data exchange between functions of the EMS and the data exchange between EMS and other on board units, where data are exchanged using a communications protocol stack over a dedicated physical interface or a shared communication network.

BS EN 50463-4 provides the requirements and guidance regarding the data communication between the functions implemented within EMS as well as between such functions and other on board units where data are exchanged using a communications protocol stack over a dedicated physical interface or a shared network.

BS EN 50463-4 guideline assists you with requirements on communication between functions of the EMS, VMF/CMF to ECF Interface (VEI), EMF to DHS interface (EMDI), DHS to location function, communication between the EMS and ground, application services (service layer), message mechanism (message layer), communication architecture, and access security for communication for energy management.

BS EN 50463-4 also provides conformity assessment on PICS, PIXIT, design review, and type test procedure for communication for energy management.

With compliance and obedience of BS EN 50463-, you can standardize the ground communication services and minimize the barriers in communication for energy management on-board train.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 50463-4:2017 supersedes EN 50463-4:2012, which is withdrawn. BS EN 50463-4:2017 has made some technical changes comparedt to EN 50463-4:2012. These include:

  • General replacement of the text of 4.3 with new complete protocols for data transfer between EMS and DCS to make it interoperable (Clause 4)
  • Introduction of a link to the EN 61375 Communication standard series (Clause 4)
  • Introduction of the normative Annexes D to F containing the XML schemas to detail the requirements of Clause 4
