What is BS EN 50121-1 - Electromagnetic compatibility of railway applications about?

BS EN 50121 discusses electromagnetic compatibility for railway applications. BS EN 50121-1 is a European standard that provides general details for electromagnetic compatibility in railway applications.

BS EN 50121-1 outlines the structure and the content of the whole set. A management process to achieve EMC at the interface between the railway infrastructure and trains is referenced.

BS EN 50121-1 specifies the performance criteria applicable to the whole standards series.

Note 1: This part alone is not sufficient to give presumption of conformity to the essential requirements of the EMC-Directive and is intended to be used in conjunction with other parts of BS EN 50121-1.

Note 2: Phenomena excluded from the set are Nuclear EM pulse, abnormal operating conditions (e.g., fault conditions), and the induction effects of a direct lightning strike

Note 3: Emission limits at the railway system boundary do not apply to intentional transmitters within the railway system boundaries.

Note 4: Safety considerations are not covered by this set of BSEN 50121-1

Note 5: The biological effects of non-ionizing radiation as well as apparatus for medical assistance, such as pacemakers, are not considered here.

Who is BS EN 50121-1 - Electromagnetic compatibility of railway applications for?

BS EN 50121-1 on electromagnetic compatibility of railway applications is applicable for:

  • Manufacturers of railway vehicles and their components
  • Engineers
  • Test centers
  • Regulatory bodies

Why should you use BS EN 50121-1 - Electromagnetic compatibility of railway applications?

BS EN 50121-1 provides both a framework for managing the EMC for railway systems and specifies the limits for the electromagnetic (EM) emission of the railway system to the outside world and the EM emission and immunity for equipment operating within the railway system.

BS EN 50121-1 guideline assists you with performance criteria, management of EMC, general coupling mechanisms, principal electromagnetic phenomena for immunity, principal electromagnetic phenomena for emission, description of the different electric traction systems, components of electric traction systems, and internal sources of electromagnetic noise for electromagnetic compatibility for railway applications.

This encourages the proper assessment of electromagnetic compatibility of railway applications to obtain reliable results.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 50121-1:2017 supersedes EN 50121-1:2015, which is withdrawn. BS EN 50121-1:2017 has a deleted Annex ZZ compared to the previous edition EN 50121-1:2015.
