What is BS EN 16116‑2 about?

BS EN 16116‑2 is the second part of the European standard BS EN 16116 on ‘Railway applications.’ BS EN 16116‑2 specifies the minimum requirements for ergonomic and structural integrity of steps and handrails used together to give staff access.

BS EN 16116‑2 defines the required spaces necessary for shunter handrails, for shunter’s stand, for steps and handrails and also defines their dimensions, positions, limits for durability and functionality.

BS EN 16116‑2 also defines the general requirements for the access to tail-lights.

NOTE: BS EN 161162 does not cover ladders, top platforms and top gangways.

Who is BS EN 16116‑2 for?

BS EN 16116‑2 on designs of freight wagons is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of parts and equipment used in freight wagons
  • Railway planning and operations personnel
  • Product designer and engineers
  • Handrail designers

Why should you use BS EN 16116‑2?

Freight wagons are designed so that staff are not exposed to undue risk during coupling and for access to the vehicle or to special equipment. BS EN 16116‑2 provides requirements related to steps, handrails and shunter’s steps for freight wagons, to allow temporary travel outside the vehicle during shunting as well as to access the vehicle.

BS EN 16116‑2 gives information about the mechanical strength of the material used for all kinds of handrails and steps and grating structures to ensure that the gratings are sufficiently well-adapted to winter conditions.

Overall, BS EN 15805 lets you deliver high-quality and reliable functionality of the overall railway infrastructure for optimum operational efficiency.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 16116‑2:2021 supersedes EN 16116-2:2013. BS EN 16116‑2:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 16116-2:2013. These include:

  • 6.2.1 Space for shunter during coupling (Berne Rectangle) is deleted and transferred to pr EN 16839:2020
  • 6.3.2 Clearance for draw hook is deleted and transferred to pr EN 16839:2020
  • Annex A (normative) Calculation of space for shunter (Berne Rectangle) in curves when using screw couplings is deleted and transferred to pr EN 16839:2020
