What is BS EN 16185-2 about?

BS EN 16185 is a series of the European standard on railway vehicles providing test methods on railway braking systems.

BS EN 16185-2 is the second part of the BS EN 16185 series of documents that specifies test methods and acceptance criteria for a railway braking system for use in self-propelling thermal and electric trains, in the following document called EMU/DMU, operating on routes of the European conventional rail system network.

BS EN 16185-2 is applicable to:

  • All new vehicles designed of self-propelling thermal and electric trains
  • All major overhauls of the EMU/DMU if they involve redesigning or extensive alteration to the brake system of the vehicle concerned.

NOTE: BS EN 16185-2 does not cover:

  • Locomotive hauled trains which are specified by EN 14198
  • Mass transit rolling stock which is specified by EN 13452 (all parts)
  • High-speed trains being operated at speeds greater than 200 km/h which are specified by EN 15734-1 and tests in EN 15734-2.

The functional testing requirements set out in BS EN 16185-2 assume the vehicles are fitted with brake system architecture.

The braking performance obtained by applying the tests defined in BS EN 16185-2 can be used to assess compliance with the required braking performance.

Why should you use BS EN 16185-2?

The braking system in the railway is necessary as it takes the kinetic energy of the moving vehicle and converts it to thermal energy through friction.

BS EN 16185-2 defines the general requirements of railway brakes to verify the braking performance and functions of the MU brake system.

Static tests program and dynamic tests schedule are provided in BS EN 16185-2.

BS EN 16185-2 gives the measurement of the friction application force and brake response time, delay time, quantity and methodology of tests, and condition of wheels.

Furthermore, BS EN 16185-2 provides an introduction to railway braking systems and their performance to achieve safe deceleration and stability under all operational conditions.
