What is BS EN 161851 about?  

BS EN 161851 is the first part of the BS EN 16185 series of documents that describes the functionality, constraints, performance and operation of a brake system for use in self-propelling thermal and electric trains operating on routes of the European rail system network. 

NOTE 1: BS EN 161851 covers: 

  • All new vehicle designs of self-propelling thermal and electric trains being operated at a maximum speed up to 200 km/h, in the following text simply called EMU/DMU 
  • All major overhauls of the above-mentioned vehicles if they involve redesigning or extensive alteration to the brake system of the vehicle concerned. 

NOTE 2: BS EN 161851 does not cover: 

  • Locomotive hauled trains which are specified by EN 14198 
  • Mass transit rolling stock which is specified by EN 13452-1 
  • High-speed trains being operated at speeds greater than 200 km/h which are specified by EN 15734-1.

The most important mission of braking systems in railway vehicles is to perform their functions without compromising reliability principles. In this sense, the braking systems convert all or part of the kinetical energy of the moving vehicle into other forms of energy to reduce the speed. 

BS EN 161851 provides the design principles on the safety of railway braking systems of multiple unit trains including brake equipment types namely, friction brake and the dynamic brake. BS EN 161851 describes a wheel slide protection system to avoid wheel flats and to optimize the use of the available adhesion while braking. BS EN 161851 allows testing on the driver's brake test to confirm that all brake subsystems are configured correctly.
