What is BS EN 14535-1- Design and dimensions of railway brake discs about?

BS EN 14535 is a series of European standards on railway applications that discusses various functional aspects. BS EN 14535-1 is the first part of the multi-series standard. BS EN 14535-1 specifies requirements for the design and dimensions of the brake disc.

BS EN 14535-1 applies to discs pressed or shrunk onto the axle or drive shaft of railway rolling stock by a cylindrical or conic tapered interference fit and to discs having one or more disc brake rings, each having two axially separated friction faces.

Who is BS EN 14535-1- Design and dimensions of railway brake discs for?

BS EN 14535-1 on railway applications is applicable to:

  • Railway engineer
  • Manufacturers of railway brake discs
  • Mechanical engineer

Why should you use BS EN 14535-1- Design and dimensions of railway brake discs?

Disc brakes are required to reduce the thermal stress on the wheel when a large amount of brake energy is converted. Application tests to examine braking performances and an assessment of the capacity of use on a specific vehicle with its braking equipment in service is provided in BS EN 14535-1.

BS EN 14535-1 navigates you through the designs and dimensions of discs to be utilised as a part of friction brakes. BS EN 14535-1 helps engineers to demonstrate normal wear, surface cracks, and deformations of the friction face that are within allowed limits so that the friction face is not to be harmed or degraded.

With obedience and compliance to BS EN 14535-1, you can efficiently manufacture high-quality brake discs. BS EN 14535-1 helps you achieve precision in terms of the product specification. With BS EN 14535-1 you can be ensured that the products consistently meet and exceed quality assurance targets.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 14535-1:2019 supersedes EN 14535-1:2005+A1:2011. BS EN 14535-1:2019 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 14535-1:2005+A1:2011. These include:

  • The standard’s scope and normative references have been modified
  • Terms and definitions have been revised
  • Requirements on materials, design, dimensions and installation have been revised
  • Requirements on designation, testing and markings have been revised
  • Annexes have been revised.
