What is BS EN 14752 about?

BS EN 14752 specifies the requirements for testing of entrance systems.

BS EN 14752 applies to passenger body side entrance systems of all newly designed railway vehicles such as tram, metro, suburban, mainline and high-speed trains that carry passengers.

BS EN 14752 makes reference to manual and power operated entrance systems.

BS EN 14752 specifies the minimum requirements for the construction and operation of railway passenger access systems to ensure:

  • Safe access and egress from passenger trains through body side doors and steps
  • Usability for persons with reduced mobility
  • A minimum risk of injury to persons as a result of the door and step operation
  • That the doors and moveable steps, ramps, bridging plates remain closed when the vehicle is in motion
  • Safe maintenance of the entrance systems

NOTE 1: Manual doors, clauses referring to power operation are not applicable in this standard.

NOTE 2: BS EN 14752 does not apply to the following:

  • Entrance systems for equipment access, inspection or maintenance purposes and for crew only use
  • Doors on freight wagons
  • Doors or hatches specifically provided for escape under emergency conditions.

NOTE 3: BS EN 14752 does not apply to Urban Rail rolling stock braking system, which is specified by EN 13452‑1.

Who is BS EN 14752 for?

BS EN 14752 on bodyside entrance systems is relevant to:

  • Rolling stock manufacturing companies
  • Railway authorities
  • Railway engineer
  • Operators
  • Designers
  • Mechanical engineer

Why should you use BS EN 14752?

An important factor in ensuring that train operating schedules are maintained is that passengers can enter and exit the train efficiently and safely. The quality, reliability, and effectiveness of the train entrance system are therefore crucial in maintaining service levels to passengers and optimizing operational efficiency. In this regard, BS EN 14752 is your one-stop guide for requirements and the categories of test methods for the testing of entrance systems of railways.

BS EN 14752 provides you with information about the constructional requirements of the railway entrance like door design, mechanical strength, local door control devices labels or signs to instruct passengers on the use of the door equipment, the fire protection of doors and associated equipment.

BS EN 14752 also gives guidelines on operational requirements, like door control, involving interlocking and mechanical locking and gives safety provisions to reduce the possibility of passengers and objects being trapped by the door.

Compliance to test methods under BS EN 14752 allows you to fulfil the construction requirements of the railway entrance, including doors and bridges, to provide safety provisions for passengers and railway operators. In this manner it lets you deliver a highly functional and safe bodyside entrance system.
