What is BS EN 12082 about?  

BS EN 12082 specifies the principles and methods for a rig performance test of the system of axle box rolling bearing(s), housing, seal(s) and grease. Test parameters and minimum performance requirements for vehicles in operation on main lines are specified. Different test parameters and performance requirements may be selected for vehicles in operation on other networks (e. g. urban rail). 

BS EN 12082 is developed for outboard applications but can be used for vehicles with other bearing arrangements (e.g.: inboard application or single wheels) and describes in detail the water tightness test and basic principles and minimum requirements for a field test. 

NOTE: BS EN 12082 only applies to axle boxes equipped with rolling bearings and greases according to EN 12080 and EN 12081

Why should you use BS EN 12082? 

Railway technology helps prevent accidents, delays while increasing track capacity, customer satisfaction and cost effectiveness. In this regard, axleboxes are the housing of bearings that support axle load and aid in lubrication that minimizes friction.  

To improve the reliability, durability, high-speed capacity and maintenance of the rail transportation system, BS EN 12082 equips you with required quality, safety and efficiency parameters of axleboxes that are covered by the set of standards: EN 12080 and EN 12081. 

The goal of standardizing axlebox performance testing for all types of rolling stock is to guarantee that the assembly of box housing, bearing(s), seal(s), and grease is suitable for the service requirements. 

BS EN 12082 helps you accurately measure stiffness and losses of gearboxes under varying circumstances. These measurements include damaged components and other lubrications. The presented measurements are done using quasi-static measurements. 

Through BS EN 12082, you will be able to improve safety and reliability of the axle-box, which could mitigate risks of accidents and positively impact life cycle cost of the vehicle. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 12082:2017+A1:2021 supersedes EN 12082:2017. BS EN 12082:2017+A1:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 12082:2017. These include: 

  • A clarification on how to account for stops and variations in speed is added 
  • A clarification on how to evaluate the first four elementary trips as well as the pre-test is added 
  • A clarification on which type of axlebox to be tested in the field is added 
  • The location of the temperature sensor position in the target zone is better specified 
  • The temperature criteria are clarified and Annex D (informative) gives examples on evaluation
