What is BS EN 17285 about?

BS EN 17285 specifies procedures to assess acoustic signals at passenger external doors applying to all kinds of rolling stock.

BS EN 17285 applies to:

  • Acoustical passenger information indicating the release, opening, and closing of passenger doors
  • Tonal signals with defined frequency components levels and pulse sequences

NOTE: BS EN 17285 is not applicable to spoken information or to signals comprising a sequence of impulses (such as a door finding signal).

Why should you use BS EN 17285?

Each passenger doorway in the side of a rail vehicle must be fitted with an audible warning device which must emit a warning sound commencing not less than 3 seconds before the door starts to close.

BS EN 17285 provides information on the instrumentation and sound calibration measuring door audible warnings system at one or more frequencies over the frequency range of interest.

BS EN 17285 gives the number of vestibules types to calculate the wavelength of sound in air at the lowest primary tone of the audible warning signal.
