What is BS EN 61169-45 - Radio-frequency connectors about?

BS EN 61169 is a series on radio-frequency connectors. A Radio-frequency connector is an electrical connector designed to work at radio frequencies in the multi-megahertz range. BS EN 61169-45 is a sectional specification (SS), that provides information and rules for the preparation of detailed specifications (DS) for type SQMA quick lock RF coaxial connectors. The connectors are normally used with 50 Ω in the microwave, telecommunication, wireless and other fields, connecting with RF cables or micro-strips. The operating frequency limit is up to 18 GHz.

BS EN 61169-45 describes the interface dimensions for general purpose connectors grade 2 and standard test connectors – grade 0 with gauging information and the mandatory tests selected from IEC 61169-1, applicable to all detail specifications relative to type SQMA connectors. BS EN 61169-45 indicates the recommended performance characteristics to be considered when writing a DS and covers all tests schedules and inspection requirements for assessment levels M and H.

Who is BS EN 61169-45 - Radio-frequency connectors for?

BS EN 61169-45 on radio-frequency connectors is useful for:

  • Telecommunication component manufacturers
  • Telecommunication equipment manufacturers
  • Design engineers
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use BS EN 61169-45 - Radio-frequency connectors

Radio-frequency connectors are typically used with coaxial cables and are designed to maintain the shielding that the coaxial design offers. BS EN 61169-45 provide recommended ratings, performance, and test conditions to be considered when writing a detailed specification (DS). BS EN 61169-45 also provide an appropriate schedule of tests with minimum levels of conformance. BS EN 61169-45 consist of three consecutive lots passing test groups A1 and B1 followed by a selection of specimens from the lots as appropriate. These specimens successfully pass the specified periodic group D tests.

BS EN 61169-45 cover the majority of tests and measuring procedures required for the qualification approval and conformance inspection of RF connectors. However, not all the tests are applicable to all sectional and detail specifications, the sectional specification shall prescribe the tests (and any additional tests) applicable to a particular connector type, detail specifications shall identify which of the non-mandatory tests prescribed in the relevant sectional specification are applicable to a particular style/variant of the connector and any additional test methods shall be clearly identified as such. BS EN 61169-45 provide the basis for qualification approval and quality conformance inspection tests to be included in each SS. Details of any deviations necessary from the standard test method and/or conditions are to be indicated. Tests are to be carried out in the order shown unless otherwise prescribed. The detailed specification, when completed, provide the user, manufacturer, test house and certification body with all the necessary information for the approval testing and quality conformance inspection relating to a connector style and any variants within a specific series of RF connectors. Using BS EN 61169-45 you can provide information and rules for the preparation of detailed specifications (DS) for type SQMA quick lock RF coaxial connectors.
