BS IEC 60096-0-1 discusses the starting point used is to determine the nominal characteristic impedance, zo and the outer diameter of dielectric, D2 of radio frequency cables. 

The method used to calculate the current carrying capacity of coaxial cables is a thermodynamic model of a cable installed indoors in the air. It considers the heat flow from the inner and outer conductor through the dielectric and sheath materials. When calculating the current carrying capacity of coaxial cables, the worst-case condition is typically considered. Since indoor cables do not benefit from wind cooling effects, it is assumed that cables installed indoors, or in enclosed areas, represent the worst-case scenario. The calculations do not take into consideration any de-rating factors that may need to be applied to account for additional temperature effects due to solar radiation and wind cooling effects in external applications. BS IEC 60096-0-1:2012+A1:2017 includes some technical changes. These include: 

  • Tables of material constants and factors and have been updated, different equations have been updated and corrected 
  • A subclause dealing with the calculation of “current carrying capacity of coaxial cables” has been added as subclause 7.7
