What is BS EN IEC 60966-1 - Radiofrequency and coaxial cable about?

An RF connector (radio frequency connector) is an electrical connector designed to work at radio frequencies in the multi-megahertz range. Radio-frequency connectors are typically used with coaxial cables and are designed to maintain the shielding that the coaxial design offers. BS EN IEC 60966-1 is the first part of Radiofrequency and coaxial cable assemblies which specifies requirements for radio frequency coaxial cable assemblies operating in the transverse electromagnetic mode (TEM) and establishes general requirements for testing the electrical, mechanical and environmental properties of radiofrequency coaxial cable assemblies composed of cables and connectors.

Who is BS EN IEC 60966-1 - Radiofrequency and coaxial cable for?

BS EN IEC 6116912 on RF coaxial connectors is applicable to those entities who are industry experts in communication devices and involved in writing specifications for RF emission ranges for coaxial connectors. So, BS EN IEC 6116912 is useful for:

  • Communication device and equipment industry experts
  • Regulatory bodies
  • Research and development teams
  • Product innovation teams

Why should you use BS EN IEC 60966-1 - Radiofrequency and coaxial cable?

Common types of RF connectors are used for TV receivers, two-way radio, certain WI-FI devices with removable antennas, and industrial or scientific measurements instruments using radio frequencies. The purpose of BS EN IEC 60966-1 is to give general procedures on how to achieve quality management for radiofrequency cable assemblies.

BS EN IEC 60966-1 implementation allows us to transmit radio frequency signals from one point to another in a system with a minimum amount of attenuation and quality transmission of data which will be beneficial for the sender as well as the receivers end.

You can get a benefit by using BS EN IEC 60966-1 because they are inexpensive and reap other benefits like easy to wire and install, easy to expand, good resistance to EMI, up to 10Mbps capacity, durability to get a less attenuated data transmission. Using BS EN IEC 60966-1 you can specify requirements for radio frequency coaxial cable assemblies operating in the transverse electromagnetic mode.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN IEC 609661:2019 supersedes BS EN 609661:1999, which is withdrawn and includes technical changes with respect to BS EN 609661:1999. These include:

  • Annexe C Measurement method for screening effectiveness was cancelled
  • Subclause 8.9 gives references to relevant test procedures
