What is BS 6160-3 - Mobile radio receiver emissions about?

BS 6160 is a series on radio equipment used in mobile services. defined as an electrical or electronic product, which intentionally emits and/or receives radio waves for the purpose of radio communication and/or radio determination. BS 6160-3 applies specifically to mobile radio receivers having audio-frequency bandwidths generally not exceeding 10 kHz for the reception of voice and other types of signals, using:

  • Angle modulation [frequency modulation (F3E)/phase modulation (G3E)
  • Double-sideband amplitude modulation with the full carrier (A3E)

BS 6160-3 is intended to be used in conjunction with IEC Publication 60489-1. The supplementary terms and definitions and the conditions of measurement set forth in BS 6160-3 are intended for type tests and may also be used for acceptance tests.

Radio equipment is a set of equipment necessary to carry on communication via radio waves. The object of BS 6160-3 is to standardize the definitions, the conditions, and the methods of the measurement are used to ascertain the performance of receivers within the scope of BS 6160-3 and to make possible a meaningful comparison of the results of measurements made by different observers and on different equipment. Impulsive noise degrades the performance of a receiver by reducing its sensitivity, for example, the input signal level should be increased to maintain a specified signal-to-noise ratio. The response of the receiver to impulsive noise will vary with the spectrum amplitude of the noise and the noise pulse-repetition rate.

Selectivity is the ability of the receiver to discriminate between wanted and unwanted input signals. The methods of measurement described in BS 6160-3 deal only with interference that degrades the receiver output signal due to the simultaneous presence of a wanted and an unwanted input signal. It is to be noted, however, that unwanted signals may also be objectionable when the wanted signal is not present. The characteristics to be measured are agreed upon and are measured in accordance with BS 6160-3. The presence of the transmitter radio-frequency power may cause additional spurious responses and desensitization of the receiver. Using BS 6160-3 you can specify mobile radio receivers having audio-frequency bandwidths generally not exceeding 10 kHz for the reception of voice and other types of signals.
