What is BS 6160-5 - Single-sideband technique about?

BS 6160 is a series on radio equipment used in mobile services. Radio equipment used in mobile services is a set of equipment necessary to carry on communication via radio waves. BS 6160-5 refers specifically to mobile radio receivers having audio-frequency bandwidths generally not exceeding 10 kHz for the reception of voice and other types of signals, using single-sideband amplitude modulation.

BS 6160-5 is intended to be used in conjunction with IEC Publication 489-1. The supplementary terms and definitions and the conditions of measurement set forth in BS 6160-5 are intended for type tests and may be used also for acceptance tests.

Why should you use BS 6160-5 - Single-sideband technique?

Radio equipment generally, is a receiver or transmitter or transceiver, an antenna, and some smaller additional equipment necessary to operate them. The object of BS 6160-5 is to standardize the definitions, the conditions and the methods of measurement used to ascertain the performance of receivers within the scope of BS 6160-5 and to make possible a meaningful comparison of the results of measurements made by different observers and on different equipment. Impulsive noise degrades the performance of a receiver by reducing its sensitivity, for example, the input-signal level must be increased to maintain a specified signal-to-noise ratio. The response of the receiver to impulsive noise will vary with the spectrum amplitude of the noise (see Appendix C) and the noise pulse-repetition rate.

Selectivity is the ability of the receiver to discriminate between wanted and unwanted input signals. It can be evaluated by measuring the adjacent-signal selectivity, the spurious response, cross-modulation and blocking or desensitization. The methods of measurement described in BS 6160-5 deal only with interference that degrades the wanted receiver output signal due to the simultaneous presence of an unwanted input signal. It is to be noted, however, that unwanted signals may also be objectionable when the wanted signal is not present. The characteristics to be measured should be agreed upon and should be measured in accordance with BS 6160-5. The presence of the transmitter radio-frequency power may cause additional spurious responses and desensitization of the receiver. Using BS 6160-5 you can specify mobile radio receivers having audio-frequency bandwidths generally not exceeding 10 kHz for the reception of voice and other types of signals, using single-sideband amplitude modulation.
