What is PD IEC TS 63050-Requirements and test methods for dosemeters about?

PD IEC TS 63050 discusses radiation protection instrumentation. PD IEC TS 63050 is an international standard on the requirements and test methods for dosemeters for pulse fields radiation protection instrumentation to ensure protection to workers at the workplace.

PD IEC TS 63050 applies to all types of dosemeters, irrespective of the type of radiation intended to be measured. Tests under PD IEC TS 63050 determine whether a single radiation pulse can be measured correctly even if the dosemeter is in the internal state relevant for measuring background or environmental radiation.

PD IEC TS 63050 considers the pulsation of the radiation field as an additional influence quantity like particle energy and direction of radiation incidence. Therefore, the tests described are additional to all the tests in the instrument-specific standards.

PD IEC TS 63050 describes methods to determine the following characteristic parameters of the dosemeters:

  • The maximum measurable dose rate in the pulse, Hmeas, max
  • The maximum measurable dose in the pulse, Hmeas, max
  • The minimal pulse duration, tmeas, min
  • The range for the pulse repetition frequency, fmeas, min to fmeas, max

Note1: These parameters may be inter-related depending on the detector used.

Note2: The term dose used in PD IEC TS 63050 is in the sense of dose equivalent, but the requirements can also be adapted to air kerma, exposure, or other quantities expressing the amount of radiation.

Note3: The parameter pulse repetition frequency, fpulse, is included in the testing procedures, but for this inclusion additional work has to be done. Especially, reference fields for radiation

conditions in surrounding fields of accelerators are missing (high pulse repetition frequency, ultra-short pulses).

Who is PD IEC TS 63050- Requirements and test methods for dosemeters for?

PD IEC TS 63050 on the requirements and test methods for dosemeters is useful for:

  • Radiologist
  • Radiation protection instrument manufacturers
  • Health and safety departments
  • Research laboratories
  • Radiation safety officers

Why should you use PD IEC TS 63050- Requirements and test methods for dosemeters?

A dosemeter is a device that measures and indicates the number of x-rays exposed in a certain period of time. The specification and determination of the special characteristics required for dosemeters to be used in pulsed fields of ionizing radiation have been excluded from all standards for direct reading personal and environmental dosemeters issued before 2015 for radiation protection purposes. These standards only specify characteristics for continuous radiation

PD IEC TS 63050 provides you with test procedures, requirements, electrical requirements, mechanical requirements, electromagnetic requirements, radiation detection requirements, and test methods

The requirements and test methods provided by PD IEC TS 63050 assists in improving the performance of dosemeters and ensure protection to workers from radiation hazards.

PD IEC TS 63050 assist the user in judging whether or not the dosemeter under consideration can be used.

By adopting PD IEC TS 63050 the user can improve the efficacy of radiation protection instruments and enhance the product’s standard and quality.
