What is ISO 800003 about?

ISO 80000-3 is the third part of a series of documents on quantities and units. ISO 800003 gives names, symbols, definitions and units for quantities of space and time.

ISO 800003 also includes conversion factors that are given wherever deemed appropriate.

Who is ISO 800003 for?

ISO 800003 on quantities and units - space and time is useful for:

  • Mechanical engineers
  • Space and time professionals

Why should you use ISO 800003

Units are the tools to measure and compare different things. Comparison becomes easier when all the units for the measurement are identical.  Quantity is a property that can exist as a multitude or magnitude, which shows discontinuity and continuity. Quantities can be compared in terms of "more", "less", or "equal", or by assigning a numerical value in terms of a unit of measurement.

In physics, spacetime is any mathematical model which fuses the three dimensions of space and the one dimension of time into a single four-dimensional manifold.

ISO 800003 includes a table that covers the item number, name, symbol, definition, units and remarks for space and time. This topic can get very technical and difficult to understand hence there is a need to make the quantities and units for space and time standardised. This can save a lot of time and energy for your organization by making it easier to understand this subject, which will in turn increase productivity and efficiency for your organization.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 800003:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 800003:2013, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 800003:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 800003:2013. These are:

  • The table giving the quantities and units has been simplified
  • Some definitions and the remarks have been stated physically more precisely
