What is BS EN 15531-3 - Public transport-SIRI about?

Public transport services rely on information systems to ensure reliable, efficient operation and widely accessible, accurate passenger information. The Standard Interface for Real-time information (SIRI) is an XML protocol to allow distributed computers to exchange real-time information about public transport services and vehicles.

BS EN 15531 series specifies SIRI about Public Transport operations. SIRI is used to exchange information between servers containing real-time public transport vehicle or journey time data, as well as between server and end-user devices like smartphones or web browsers. These include the control centres of transport operators and information systems that utilise real-time vehicle information, for example, to deliver services such as travel information.

BS EN 15531-3 specifies the number of functional modules such as production timetable, estimated timetable, stop timetable, stop monitoring, vehicle monitoring, connection timetable, connection monitoring, and general message.

BS EN 15531-3 facilitates interoperability between information processing systems of the transport operators by introducing common architectures for message exchange, introducing a modular set of compatible information services for real-time vehicle information, using common data models and schemas for the messages exchanged for each service and introducing a consistent approach to data management.

Who is BS EN 15531-3 - Public transport-SIRI for?

BS EN 15531-3 on public transport-SIRI is useful for:

  • Transport authorities
  • Software companies/IT firms
  • Telecommunication companies
  • The public transport industry
  • Organizations involved in exchange Real-time Information relating to public transport operation

Why should you use BS EN 15531-3 - Public transport-SIRI?

The service interface for real-time information (SIRI) uses a consistent set of general communication protocols to exchange information between client and server. The same pattern of message exchange may be used to implement different specific functional interfaces as sets of concrete message content types.

BS EN 15531-3 on SIRI provides a framework for specifying communications and data exchange protocols for organizations wishing to exchange Real-time Information relating to public transport operations.

BS EN 15531-3 assist in better vehicle management by allowing the precise tracking of both local and roaming vehicles, providing data that can be used to improve performance, such as the measurement of schedule adherence and allowing the distribution of schedule updates and other messages in real-time.

BS EN 15531-3 guidelines help to improve a number of features of public transport information and service management such as interoperability, operations management, and delivery of real-time information to end-users.
