What is PD CEN/TR 17370 - OpRa for public transport about?

Public transport services rely on information systems to ensure reliable, efficient operation and widely accessible, accurate passenger information. PD CEN/TR 17370 focuses on operating raw data and statistics exchange (OpRa).

OpRa work has been conducted through the phases such as assessment, use cases definition and classification, indicators definition, and raw data identification. OpRa takes most public transport modes, except air transport, into account. PD CEN/TR 17370 includes rail, bus, metro, tramway, trolleybus, ferry, coach, funicular railway, suspension railway, and rack railway.

Conforming to PD CEN/TR 17370, OpRa management information deals with functions analysing production data in order to evaluate the service quality or to take corrective measures in planning and managing operations. In public transport, the study of operational data (example, observed run times, passenger load) collected during service operations is an input for strategic planning (how and when to amend the schedules), tactical planning (example, when to undertake a certain control action), quality follow-up, etc.

Management information uses two main types of data:

  • Data resulting from the planning stages, theoretical data on the production orders (examples- timetables, run times, driver rosters)
  • Data describing the daily actual production (examples- observed passing times, actual number of passengers, missed interchanges, modifications operated to the plan)

Who is PD CEN/TR 17370 - OpRa for public transport for?

PD CEN/TR 17370  on OpRa for public transport is useful for:

  • Public transport operators
  • Public transport authorities
  • Public transport agencies
  • Infrastructure managers
  • Transport on demand service providers

Why should you use PD CEN/TR 17370 - OpRa for public transport?

The public transport sector has identified the necessity to develop a data strategy, based on the cost and value, focusing on the strategic benefits of data. Public transport is a data-enabled or data-driven business. There is a need to standardize data analysis in public transport to understand how information can be created as added value and indicator calculation can facilitate moving from a qualitative analysis of the public transport service towards a quantitative one.

PD CEN/TR 17370 on OpRa is a CEN initiative with a focus on the identification of public transport raw data to be exchanged, gathered and stored in order to support the study and control of public transport services.

With PD CEN/TR 17370, OpRa describes the recorded reality of operation, like delays and cancelled vehicle journeys, etc. either through individual measurements at a given sampling interval or in an aggregate way (statistics). Using PD CEN/TR 17370 guidelines on OpRa, you facilitate smoother operations of public transport, making commuter experiences more positive.
