What is BS EN 142762 about?

BS EN 14276 discusses pressure equipment for refrigerating systems and heat pumps. BS EN 142762 discusses the piping specifications for this pressure equipment. BS EN 142762 specifies the requirements for material, design, manufacturing, testing and documentation for stationary piping intended for use in refrigerating systems, heat pumps and secondary cooling and heating systems.

BS EN 142762 applies to pipe, including welded or brazed attachments up to and including the flanges, screwed, welded or brazed connectors, or to the edge to be welded or brazed at the first circumferential joint connecting piping or other elements.

BS EN 142762 applies to the selection, application and installation of safety accessories intended to protect the piping during the various phases of the refrigeration cycle.

BS EN 142762 applies to the following piping:

  • Heat exchanger consisting of piping for the purpose of cooling or heating air where piping aspects are predominant
  • Piping incorporated into an assembly
  • Field-erected piping

BS EN 142762 applies to both the mechanical loading conditions and thermal conditions associated with refrigerating systems, to piping subject to the maximum allowable temperatures for which nominal design stresses for materials.

Who is BS EN 142762 for?

BS EN 142762 on pressure equipment for refrigerating systems and heat pumps (piping) is useful for:

  • Refrigerator manufacturers
  • Heat pump manufacturers
  • Manufacturers of accessories for pressure equipment
  • Research and development facilities
  • Design engineers

Why should you use BS EN 142762?

Safety is a prime concern around pressure equipment. The pipes for such pressure equipment should be able to withstand the pressure without getting damaged. BS EN 142762 implementation on pressure equipment for refrigerating systems and heat pumps provides detailed information on the requirements for the piping of the system.

Piping is subject to the maximum allowable temperatures for which nominal design stresses for materials are derived as specified in BS EN 14276-2. Piping designed as per BS EN 142762 has a maximum design temperature not exceeding 200°C and a maximum design pressure not exceeding 160 bar.

Implementing BS EN 142762, you can increase the longevity of pressure-bearing pipes, thus improving the functioning of your refrigerators and heat pumps.
