What is ISO 85026 about?  

ISO 8502 discusses the preparation of steel substrates for paint application. ISO 8502 series covers tests for the assessment of surface cleanliness. ISO 85026 specifies the Bresle method for extracting water-soluble contaminants from a surface, for analysis. 

The Bresle method is suitable for use in the field to determine the presence of water-soluble contaminants before painting or a similar treatment. 

Note1:  The extraction method might give a false negative or not take all the water-soluble material off the surface because of:  

  • Soluble materials hiding in the crevices or under folds of metal 
  • Soluble materials under corrosion layers, passivation layers produced by corrosion inhibitors, oil, grease, or other non-visible thin films 

Note2: ISO 85026 does not cover the subsequent analysis of the contaminants that have been dissolved. Methods of analysis suitable for field use are described in other parts of ISO 8502.

Why should you use ISO 85026?  

Before painting a surface, you need to ensure its cleanliness. Paint adhesion can be affected by soluble contaminants on the surface. The performance of protective coatings of paint and related products applied to steel is significantly affected by the state of the steel surface immediately prior to painting. Water-soluble contaminants are not visible to the naked eye. If any soluble contaminants remain on the substrate, then the coating will fail prematurely. 

ISO 85026 describes a simple, inexpensive field test using flexible cells in the form of adhesive cells designed to be filled with water. The Bresle method described in ISO 85026 will help you to identify the soluble contaminant level on substrates, and ensure that your paint coatings won’t prematurely fail due to excessive moisture content.  

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN ISO 85026:2020 cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 8502-6:2006), which has been technically revised. 

The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows: 

  • Inclusion of the sleeve type extraction cells to be used with water extraction 
  • Specification that only water is used as a solvent for this method
