What is ISO 11126-5-Non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives about?

ISO 11126 discusses non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives. ISO 11126-5 is the fifth part of ISO 11126 and discusses non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives nickel slag. Nickel slag abrasive is a type of abrasive material used for blast cleaning. The shape of each individual particle makes nickel slag ideal for the efficient removal of mill scale, rust, or existing coatings from steel and other metals in preparation for fabrication or painting.

ISO 11126-5 specifies requirements for nickel slag abrasives, as supplied for blast-cleaning processes. The requirements specified in ISO 11126-5 apply to abrasives supplied in the "new" condition only. They do not apply to abrasives either during or after use. Test methods for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives are given in the various parts of ISO 11127.

Note: Although ISO 11126-5 has been developed specifically to meet requirements for the preparation of steelwork, the properties specified will generally be appropriate for use when preparing other material surfaces, or components, using blast-cleaning techniques. These techniques are described in ISO 8504-2

Who is ISO 11126-5-Non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives for?

ISO 11126-5 on specifications for non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives (Nickel slag abrasive) is useful for:

  • Steel products manufacturers
  • Paint industries
  • Interior and exterior designer
  • Painters

Why should you use ISO 11126-5-Non-metallic blast-cleaning abrasives

Abrasive blast cleaning is the method of surface preparation by abrasive particles forced by either compressed air or water jet. The particles impact the surface at high velocity and produce the effects of cleaning, roughening, and activation.

ISO 11126-5 specifies requirements for nickel slag abrasives, as supplied for blast-cleaning processes. ISO 11126-5 specifies ranges of particle sizes and values for apparent density, Mohs hardness, moisture content, the conductivity of aqueous extract, and water-soluble chlorides.

A clean surface is required for better adhesion of paints as clean surfaces help in the longevity of paints and ISO 11126-5 helps you to keep the surface clean before application of paints and related products of a steel substrate.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 11126-5:2018 supersedes BS EN ISO 11126-5:1998, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 11126-5:2018 includes a technical change with respect to BS EN ISO 11126-5:1998. Which is-

  • The Scope has been expanded to include ferronickel slags. tables 1 and 2 have been technically revised.
