What is BS EN 14272 - Mechanical properties of plywood about?

BS EN 14272 is one of a series of standards regarding plywood.

This European standard aims to help its users identify the physical properties of plywood to derive its suitable applications.

BS EN 14272 specifies, for plywood panels of any composition, symmetrical or not, a calculation method to derive some mechanical properties (strength and stiffness in bending, tension, compression, panel and planar shear) as well as density from the wood compounding the layers.

Who is BS EN 14272 - Mechanical properties of plywood for?

BS EN 14272 on calculation methods for plywood is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of softwood and hardwood floorboards
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of wood panels
  • Construction sectors
  • Civil engineers
  • Architects

Why should you use BS EN 14272 - Mechanical properties of plywood?

Plywood is made up of three or more thin layers of wood bonded together with adhesives. It can be used in various fields for different purposes. However, plywood’s applications depend on its mechanical properties value.

BS EN 14272 defines the procedures to derive the veneer properties, in bending, tension and compression. BS EN 14272 provides practical spreadsheets, which are applications of the equations/formulas. This enables you to utilize these equations more efficiently in practice.

BS EN 14272 also provide an example for the calculation of bending strength, to help you understand it better.

Overall, these calculation methods of BS EN 14272 help you to derive characteristic values for plywood based on which you can identify its applications in field of construction, furniture making, packaging etc.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 14272:2011 supersedes ENV 14272:2002.

Compared to ENV 14272:2002, the following modifications have been made in BS EN 14272:2011:

  • Calculation applies to panels of any composition, symmetrical or not
  • Values resulting for the panels can be used for calculation as characteristics values as required by EN 1995-1-1
  • New Annex A (normative) provides the derivation for the veneer values (basic values)
  • New Annex B (normative) provides practical spreadsheets to derive the properties
  • New Annex C (informative) gives an example of bending strength
