What is ISO 1409 about?
ISO 1409 is an international standard used for plastics/rubber that specifies the test method which determines the surface tension of polymer dispersions and rubber latices.
ISO 1409 specifies two methods for the determination of the surface tension of polymer dispersions and rubber latices (natural and synthetic).
- Method A is the ring method (Du Noüy ring method)
- Method B is the plate method (Wilhelmy plate method)

Why should you use ISO 1409?
Surface tension is responsible for the shape of liquid droplets. These droplets of water tend to be pulled into a spherical shape by the cohesive forces of the surface layer.
ISO 1409 helps you in achieving dispersion or latex diluted with water to a mass fraction of total solids. The total solid contents are reduced which results in ensuring the viscosity is under the specified limit or not. This method is useful in maximizing the force by detaching the ring from the surface of the liquid.

What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 1409:2020 supersedes BS ISO 1409:2006. BS ISO 1409:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 1409:2006. These include:
- Extension of Clause 1 and Clause 4
- Inclusion in Clause 1 that method A is the preferred method in case of dispute
- Inclusion of the tensiometer (Wilhelmy type) and glass dish or vessel in 6.2 and 6.3
- Inclusion of the procedure of the new method B in 8.2
- Expression of the test results according to the new method B in 9.2
- Inclusion of the precision data for method B in Annex A
