What is ISO 23153-1 about ?  

ISO 23153 discusses plastics. ISO 23153-1 is the first part of the multi-series ISO 23153 and discusses the designation system and basis for specifications. ISO 23153-1 establishes a system of designation for polyetheretherketone (PEEK) moulding and extrusion materials which can be used as the basis for specifications. Polyetheretherketone polymer chains are composed of phenylene rings linked in (1,4) position by a sequence of two ether groups followed by one ketone group. 

The grades of PEEK plastics are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties 

  • Melt viscosity or melt volume-flow rate 
  • Tensile modulus 
  • Tensile strength 

ISO 23153-1 applies to materials ready for normal use in the form of powder, granules or pellets, unmodified or modified by colourants, fillers, reinforcements or other additives.

  • Melt viscosity or melt volume-flow rate: The Melt Flow Rate is a measure of the ease of flow of melted plastic and represents a typical index for Quality Control of thermoplastics. 
  • Tensile modulus: The tensile modulus of solid material is a mechanical property that measures its stiffness 
  • Tensile strength: Tensile strength is defined as the ability of a material to resist a force that tends to pull it apart. 

Over these properties specifies the quality and protection aspects of PEEK for the better performance of the product and improving credibility and consumer confidence.
