What is PD CEN/TS 1453-2 - The assessment of conformity of PVC-U piping systems about?

PD CEN/TS 1453 is a series of international standards on plastics piping systems intended to provide general information on the concept of testing and the organization of those tests used for the purpose of the assessment of conformity.

PD CEN/TS 1453-2 is the second part of the series of documents that gives guidance for the assessment of conformity of formulations, products and assemblies in accordance with EN 1453-1 intended to be included in the manufacturer’s quality plan as part of the quality management system and for the establishment of certification procedures.

It is recommended that the quality management system conforms to or is no less stringent than the relevant requirements to EN ISO 9001.

In conjunction with EN 1453-1, PD CEN/TS 1453-2 is applicable to piping systems made of unplasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC-U) intended to be used for the following purposes:

  • For soil and waste discharge systems (low and high temperature) inside buildings (application area code “B”).

Who is PD CEN/TS 1453-2 - The assessment of conformity of PVC-U piping systems for?

PD CEN/TS 1453-2 on plastic piping systems is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of pipeline components and pipelines
  • Personnel of quality assurance systems
  • Manufacturers of plastics
  • Designers and manufacturers of Unplasticized poly (vinyl chloride) pipes

Why should you use PD CEN/TS 1453-2 - The assessment of conformity of PVC-U piping systems

PVC-U stands for unplasticized PVC which means no plasticiser has been added to the PVC compound that is used for transportation of drinking water, soil and waste, sewage and underground drainage and industrial applications.

PD CEN/TS 1453-2 navigates you through the material specification consisting of a formulation that defines PVC resin and additives and their dosage levels.

PD CEN/TS 1453-2 specifies pipe groupings in three sizes, as well as pipe features that necessitate type testing to verify mechanical and physical attributes of pipes.

PD CEN/TS 1453-2 determines the characteristics of pipes and minimum sampling frequencies for:

  • Batch release tests
  • Process verification tests
  • Audit tests
  • Indirect tests

PD CEN/TS 1453-2 specifies test records containing information from a quality management system that must be kept for a minimum of five years.

Furthermore, PD CEN/TS 1453-2 guides you through the usage of PVC-U pipes is the safe choice for transportation of drinking water, light and easy to handle and affordable including high mechanical performance, high durability, high chemical resistance and resistance to UV exposure, as well as having favourable environmental profiles and being 100% recyclable.

In this manner, the conformity assessment provides assurance for regulators and consumers that plastic piping systems meet or exceed performance standards.

What’s changed since the last update?

PD CEN/TS 1453-2:2017 supersedes DD ENV 1453-2:2000. PD CEN/TS 1453-2:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to DD ENV 1453-2:2000. These include:

  • Use of the template drafted by CEN/TC 155/WG 21 for assessment of conformity documents (change of “Terms and definitions” and addition of 1 column “Sampling procedures” in Tables)
  • Introduction of “Limits of addition of PVC reprocessed and recycled material” in a separate table
  • Deletion of all requirements for TPE seals as they are no longer required
  • Addition of an informative Annex A: Basic test matrix.
