What is BS EN 17176-5 – PVC-O pipe testing standard about?  

Molecularly unplasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVCO) was developed as an improvement to the conventional PVC pipe. PVCO retains many features of PVC, including resistance to corrosion and ease of installation.  

BS EN 17176-5 specifies the characteristics of PVCO solid wall piping systems that are suitable for water supply as well as drainage, sewerage, treated wastewater, and irrigation under pressure.  

BS EN 17176-5 specifies characteristics for buried as well as above-ground piping systems (where they are protected from direct sunlight). BS EN 17176 also specifies the test parameters for testing these PVCO piping systems.

Why should you use BS EN 17176-5 - PVC-O pipe testing standard 

PVC-O’s biaxial orientation allows the pipe to be more flexible than PVC and provides increased resistance to cyclic fatigue. BS EN 17176-5 helps you to assess the suitability of different types of PVCO piping systems for various kinds of water management systems. 

BS EN 17176-5 provides guidelines for assessing optimum water temperature tolerance for different PVCO piping systems. Test methods provided by BS EN 17176-5 ensure that joint leakage is avoided. 

In conjunction with EN 17176-1, EN 17176-2, CEN/TS 17176-3 and EN ISO 1452-3, BS EN 17176-5 is applicable to PVC-O pipes, PVC-O fittings, their joints and to joints with components of other plastics and non-plastics materials intended to be used for the following: water mains and services lines 

  • Conveyance of water for both outside and inside buildings 
  • Drainage and sewerage under pressure 
  • Irrigation under pressure 

Joints constructed of other materials need to meet their own standards in addition to the fitness of purpose requirements specified in BS EN 17176-5. 

BS EN 17176-5 is applicable to piping systems intended for the supply of water with a maximum allowable operating pressure (PFA) up to and including 25 bar. The piping system according to BS EN 17176-5 is intended for the conveyance of cold water up to and including 45 °C and especially in those applications where special performance requirements are needed, such as impact loads and pressure fluctuations.
