What is CEN/TS 1401‑2 about?
PD CEN/TS 1401‑2 is the second part of the multi-series of standards on Plastics piping systems and ducting systems.
PD CEN/TS 1401‑2 is applicable to the plastics piping systems for non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage.
PD CEN/TS 1401‑2 gives requirements and guidance for the assessment of conformity of formulations, products and assemblies in accordance with EN 1401-1 intended to be included in the manufacturer’s quality plan as part of the quality management system and for the establishment of third-party certification procedures.
In conjunction with EN 1401-1, PD CEN/TS 1401‑2 is applicable to piping systems made of unplasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC-U) intended for non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage:
- Buried in the ground outside the building structure (application area code “U”)
- Both buried in the ground within the building structure and outside the building structure (application area code “UD”)
Note: The quality management system is expected to conform to or is no less stringent than the relevant requirements to EN ISO 9001.
Note: If third party certification is involved, the certification body is expected to be compliant with either EN ISO/IEC 17065 [2] or EN ISO/IEC 17021-series, as applicable.

PD CEN/TS 1401‑2 on PVC-U for plastic piping systems is relevant to:

Why should you use PD CEN/TS 1401‑2?
PVC saves energy and water by generating almost leak-free pipes that are resistant to corrosion and environmental stress.
For the purposes of PD CEN/TS 1401‑2, the material specification consists of a formulation that defines PVC resin, additives, non-virgin material (if applicable) and their dosage levels. The dosage levels and their maximum tolerance levels are also mentioned in PD CEN/TS 1401‑2.
PD CEN/TS 1401‑2 also covers groupings based on size groups and fitting groups and their required dimensions.
Relevant type-testing is based on characteristics of pipes such as PVC content, density, resistance to internal pressure, geometrical characteristics, impact-resistance and degree of gelation, amongst other. As type-testing is carried out whenever there is a change in design or formulation or production method, (other than routine in-process adjustments), or whenever there is an extension of the product range, you will be able to accurately assess the extent of material change that takes place.
The methods of testing PD CEN/TS 14012 identifies type testing, which will assist you in proving that the formulation, product, joint, or assembly meets the requirements of the relevant guideline.
Overall, as a user of PD CEN/TS 1401-2 you will be able to improve the 'level of sustainability' and the 'environmental impact' of PVC piping systems, whilst improving the recommendations and safe use of recycled material.
What’s changed since the last update?
PD CEN/TS 1401‑2:2020 supersedes PD CEN/TS 1401‑2:2012, which is withdrawn. Compared with PD CEN/TS 1401-2:2012, the following changes have been made:
- Merging of Table 1 and Table 2 to have the new Table 1 “Formulation tolerances”
- Clarification that a lower content of non-virgin material in the formulation that has already been Typing tested and fulfils the agreed specification is not considered a material change
- Increase of minimum testing frequencies if a non-virgin material is used
