What is BS EN 13476-2 about?

BS EN 13476-2 is the second part in the multi-series of documents that is applicable to plastics piping systems for non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage.

BS EN 13476-2 specifies the definitions and requirements for pipes, fittings and the system based on unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-U), polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) structured-wall piping systems that are intended to be used for non-pressure underground drainage and sewerage systems. BS EN 13476-2 is applicable to pipes and fittings with smooth internal and external surfaces, designated as Type A. It specifies test methods and test parameters as well as requirements. BS EN 13476-2 is applicable to:

  • Structured-wall pipes and fittings, which are intended to be used buried underground outside the building structure; reflected in the marking of products by “U”
  • Structured-wall pipes and fittings, which are intended to be used buried underground both outside (application area code “U”) and within the building structure (application area code “D”); reflected in the marking of products by “UD”.

BS EN 13476-2 is applicable to structured-wall pipes and fittings with or without an integral socket with elastomeric ring seal joints as well as welded and fused joints.

BS EN 13476-2 covers a range of pipe and fitting sizes, materials, pipe constructions, stiffness classes, application classes, and tolerance classes and gives recommendations concerning colours.

Who is BS EN BS EN 13476-2 for?

BS EN 13476-2 on plastic piping systems is relevant to:

  • PE, PVC-U, PP plastic pipe manufacturers
  • Pipe specifiers and installers
  • Civil engineers
  • Product design engineers
  • Contractors
  • Local authorities

Why should you use BS EN 13476-2?

PVC-U, PE and PP plastic pipes are a flexible, lightweight and corrosion-resistant piping product. These benefits make it an ideal piping material for a broad variety of applications such as potable water service or distribution lines, natural gas distribution, lawn sprinklers, sewers, waste disposal, and drainage lines.

Pipe and fitting diameters, materials, pipe structures, stiffness classes, application classes, and tolerance classes are all listed in BS EN 13476-2. This can assist you in manufacturing piping components that meet standardised requirements for high durability and performance.

By selecting the BS EN 13476-2-compliant pipes and fittings, you can ensure that product failure is avoided and overall structural integrity of the piping system is maintained. This can ultimately prevent any potential hygiene and health risks.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13476-2:2018+A1:2020 supersedes BS EN 13476-2:2018, which is withdrawn. The main changes in BS EN 13476-2:2018 with respect to the previous edition BS EN 13476-2:2007+A1:2009 are listed below:"

  • Clarification requirement ‘sealing rings’
  • Range nominal sizes extended
  • References to socket dimensions added
  • Impact strength at 0 °C added
  • Impact test for large diameter added
