What is ISO 240241 about?

ISO 240241 establishes a system of designation for vinyl chloride thermoplastic resins which can be used as the basis for specifications.

ISO 240241 is applicable to resins in powder form which consist of homopolymers of the monomer vinyl chloride and copolymers, terpolymers, etc., of vinyl chloride with one or more other monomers, but where vinyl chloride is the main constituent.

Note: It is not intended to imply that materials having the same designation give necessarily the same performance. ISO 240241 does not provide engineering data, performance data or data on processing conditions that can be required to specify a material for a particular application and/or method of processing.

Who is ISO 240241 for?

ISO 240241 on designation system and specifications of homopolymer and copolymer resins of vinyl chloride is useful for:

  • Construction industry
  • Manufacture sign designers
  • Healthcare industry
  • Chemical engineers

Why should you use ISO 240241?

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is one of the most widely produced thermoplastic polymers in the world after polyethylene and polypropylene. Its most common use is in the construction industry, but it is also used to manufacture signs, in healthcare applications, and as a fibre for clothing. If a polymer consists of only one kind of monomers, then it is called a homopolymer, while a polymer that consists of more than one kind of monomers is called a copolymer.

Under ISO 24024-1, types of vinyl chloride plastics are differentiated from each other by a classification system based on appropriate levels of the designatory properties. These are:

  • Reduced viscosity
  • Apparent density
  • Retention on a 63 μm mesh sieve
  • Plasticizer absorption at room temperature
  • The viscosity and the type of rheological behaviour of a standard paste

For unambiguous designation, ISO 240241 specifies an individual-item block that is subdivided into five data blocks providing various information regarding vinyl chloride thermoplastic resins.

Indication of additional requirements in the optional data block 5 is a way of transforming the designation of a material into a specification for a particular application.

ISO 240241 establishes and explains a designation system for vinyl chloride thermoplastic resins which you can use as a standardized basis for specification. This will bring clarity and efficiency to organizations using vinyl chloride thermoplastic resins as it will become easy for you to understand designations with a standardized basis for specification.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 240241:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 10601:1999, which is withdrawn.

BS EN ISO 240241:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 10601:1999. These are:

  • The positions of Data block 2 and Data block 4 in the old designation system have been changed
  • The last designation example has been deleted
