What is ISO 17555 about?

ISO 17555 specifies the requirements for biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) films, which are mainly used for packaging. The film can be used alone or in laminates with other films.

ISO 17555 applies only to films composed of more than 95 % (by mass) of polypropylene.

Who is ISO 17555 for?

ISO 17555 on Plastics — Film and sheeting — Biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) films is useful for:

  • Biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) films manufacturers and suppliers
  • Importers of biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) films
  • Packaging industry
  • Food and beverage industry

Why should you use ISO 17555?

Biaxially oriented polypropylene is the most important polypropylene film. It is an excellent alternative to cellophane, waxed paper, and aluminium foil. Biaxially oriented polypropylene has higher tensile strength, higher modulus (stiffness), lower elongation, better gas barrier, and lower haze than CPP. Biaxially oriented polypropylene has wide range of applications in industries such as packaging and food and beverage.

These films are generally used for getting optical clarity, puncture and crack resistance, and high gloss and transparency factors.

ISO 17555 gives you guidance about the requirements for biaxially oriented polypropylene,

and all the additional information that is needed so that you can manufacture biaxially oriented polypropylene films in compliance with European standards.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS ISO 17555:2021 supersedes ISO 17555:2003, which is withdrawn.

The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

  • The normative references have been updated
  • The gloss and thickness measurement methods have been added
  • Further International Standards for measuring water vapour transmission have been added.
