What is ISO 8985 - Vinyl acetate content in EVAC thermoplastics about?
ISO 8985 is an international organisation for standardization that specifies two categories of the method for the determination of the vinyl acetate (VAC) content of ethylene/vinyl acetate (EVAC) copolymer, for use in the designation of such copolymers according to ISO 213011.
One category is referred to as “reference methods”, the other as “test methods”. The “reference methods” are used to calibrate the method used for the determination of the vinyl acetate content of ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymers. The “test methods” are other methods that can be used for the determination if they are calibrated using one of the reference methods described in ISO 8985, provided they show certainly permissible repeatability.
Who is ISO 8985 - Vinyl acetate content in EVAC thermoplastics for?
ISO 8985 on vinyl acetate content in EVAC thermoplastics is useful for:
- The thermoplastics industry
- Testing and inspection facilities
- Quality assurance managers
- The packaging industry
- The building industry
Why should you use ISO 8985 - Vinyl acetate content in EVAC thermoplastics?
The higher the vinyl acetate the softer and less crystalline the polymer. Ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) is a low-density polyethylene that has been polymerized with vinyl acetate. It has high mechanical strength and flexibility at low temperatures, is resilient, and has a higher permeability to water vapor and gases.
ISO 8985 provides its users with guidelines for the reference and test methods for the principle, apparatus, procedure, expression of results, and the test reports.
Using ISO 8985 guidelines ensures reliability, durability, and quality assurance to its users.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 8985:2022 supersedes ISO 8985:1998, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 8985:2022 includes some technical changes with respect to ISO 8985:1998. These include:
- The normative references have been updated to the latest version
- The mandatory terms and definitions clause has been added (see clause 3)
- A “thermogravimetry test method” has been added
- Infrared spectrometer has been modified to be Fourier infrared spectrometer
- The example of the infrared spectrum has been modified from transmission to absorbance
