What is ISO 13468-2 about ?  

ISO 13468 is a series on plastics. Plastics are a wide range of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials that use polymers as the main ingredient. ISO 13468-2 covers the determination of the total luminous transmittance, in the visible region of the spectrum, of planar transparent plastics and substantially colourless plastics, using a double-beam scanning spectrophotometer. ISO 13468-2 is applicable to transparent moulding materials, films, and sheets not exceeding 10 mm in thickness. 

Note: ISO 13468-2 cannot be used for plastics that contain fluorescent materials.

Why should you use ISO 13468-2 ?  

Plastics typically are made through human industrial systems. Most modern plastics are derived from fossil fuel-based chemicals like natural gas or petroleum; however, recent industrial methods use variants made from renewable materials, such as corn or cotton derivatives. ISO 13468-2 describes luminous transmittance that is a measurement of the amount of light that passes through a transparent material. Adhesives used in electro-optical interconnect must have a high transmittance. The double-beam spectrophotometer is a device that uses two rather than one beam of light to measure how light is absorbed during spectrophotometry. Unlike single-beam units, the device allows for simultaneous measurement of a sample beam and a reference beam.  

ISO 13468-2 uses a double-beam scanning spectrophotometer to determine the total luminous transmittance helpful for correction of absorbance for solvent blank, in a single beam design, there can be fluctuations in lamp energy between the ratio recording measurements, correction due to fluctuations in stray light, beam intensity variations and electronic noise are applied in real-time. ISO 13468-2 determines the total luminous transmittance using a double-beam scanning spectrophotometer.
