What is ISO 22526-1 about?

ISO 22526-1 is the first part of the ISO 22526 multi-series, and discusses the carbon footprint of bio based plastic. ISO 22526-1 specifies the general principles and the system boundaries for the carbon and environment footprint of bio-based plastic products.

ISO 22526-1 is applicable to plastic products and plastic materials, and polymer resins; which are derived from bio-based or fossil-based constituents.

Who is ISO 22526-1 for?

ISO 22526-1 on the carbon and environment footprint of bio-based plastic is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of disposables items such as packaging, containers, straws, bags, and bottles
  • Manufacturers of non-disposable carpet, plastic piping, phone casing, and 3D printing
  • Researchers of bio-based plastic

Why should you use ISO 22526-1?

Bio-based plasticsare fully or partially made from biological resources, rather than fossil raw materials. ISO 22526-1 states the general principles of the carbon and environment footprint of bio-based plastic products.

It is important to examine the full life cycle of bio-based plastics, to ensure that they are beneficial to the environment beyond the reduction in the use of fossil resources. Increase in the use of biomass resources for manufacturing plastic products can be effective in reducing global warming and the depletion of fossil materials.
