What is BS EN 17098-1 - Barrier films used for agriculture about?

BS EN 17098-1 is the first part of an international multi-series standard used for plastics that specifies the test methods, requirements and characteristics of barrier films used for agriculture.  This test method is useful in determining the film permeability and helps in soil disinfection by using the fumigation method.

BS EN 17098-1 specifies the requirements relating to the dimensional, mechanical and physical-chemical characteristics of thermoplastic barrier films designed for agricultural and horticultural soil disinfection by means of fumigation. BS EN 17098-1 also specifies the test methods for verifying these requirements, except the method for determining film permeability using a static technique, which is specified in EN 170982. BS EN 17098-1 defines also guidance for installation, use and disposal of barrier films.

Note: BS EN 17098-1 is applicable to films used during soil disinfection by fumigation (class 1), and to films used during soil disinfection subsequently kept in situ as mulch films (class 2).

Who is BS EN 17098-1 - Barrier films used for agriculture for?

BS EN 17098-1 on Plastics is useful for:

  • Greenhouse farming
  • Farmers
  • Research laboratories on soil
  • Manufacturers of barrier films

Why should you use BS EN 17098-1 - Barrier films used for agriculture

Agriculture barrier films or agriculture plastic is used in increasing the crop output per hectare while enhancing crop quality. This barrier film is useful in soil protecting and mulching.

BS EN 17098-1 helps you in classifying the barrier films depending on their service life. With the help of film permeability, you can identify the performance of a film to fumigant permeation which is useful in deciding the test condition and types of fumigants. The requirements and test method mentioned in BS EN 17098-1 is useful in determining the film permeability using a static technique for thermoplastic barrier films. The test method that determines the film permeability is as follows:

  • Thickness, width and length of barrier films
  • Tensile properties
  • Weathering resistance
  • Peel strength
  • Impact resistance
  • Relative light transmission

BS EN 17098-1 guides you in examining, handling and installing the barrier films which results in avoiding defects that can arise in disposing of barrier films. BS EN 17098-1 provides you with the test methods, requirements and mechanical and physical characteristics which helps in soil disinfection by fumigation method. This test method in BS EN 17098-1 helps in conducting the test of barrier films used for agriculture.
