What is BS EN 120121 - Safety requirements for blade granulators and shredders about?

BS EN 120121 is the first part of a series of European standards on plastic and rubber machines that specifies the safety requirement for blade granulators and shredders to be considered while designing and manufacturing plastic and rubber products.

BS EN 120121 specifies the essential safety requirements applicable to the design and construction of blade granulators and shredders used to reduce the size of products made from plastics and/or rubber.  Machines considered in BS EN 120121 begin at the outer edge of the feeding device/feed opening and end at the discharge area.

BS EN 120121 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations, or hazardous events during all phases of the machine life cycle (see Annex A), when blade granulators and shredders are used as intended and under conditions of misuse that are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer.

Note 1: BS EN 120121 does not cover:

  • Equipment for feeding material or discharging processed material that is not an integral part of the machine
  • Machines intended to process materials that could be hazardous to health or flammable materials (e.g. Expanded foam material).

Note 2: BS EN 120121 is not applicable to blade granulators and shredders that are manufactured before the date of its publication.

Who is BS EN 120121 - Safety requirements for blade granulators and shredders for?

BS EN 120121 on plastics and rubber machines is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of plastics and rubber
  • Manufacturers of plastics and rubber machines

Why should you use BS EN 120121 - Safety requirements for blade granulators and shredders

Blade granulators and shredders are used to grind scrap parts and melt delivery systems into a liquid for reprocessing. This helps in reducing the waste and is useful in producing the components more cost-effectively.

BS EN 120121 helps you in operating the machine by providing safety requirements. With the help of BS EN 120121, you can design the push button on the machine or a similar device that can bring the machine to a complete stop. While designing the blade granulators and shredders, BS EN 120121 ensures the safety function and restoration of the energy supply when the failures related to the power supply occ in the machine while producing the products.

BS EN 120121 specifies the safety requirements for designing and constructing the blade granulators and shredders that help in avoiding the mechanical hazards which take place while manufacturing the products. The information regarding the installation of blade granulators and shredders is mentioned in BS EN 120121 which results in ensuring your safety.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 120121:2018 supersedes BS EN 120121:2007+A1:2008. BS EN 120121:2018 includes some technical changes concerning BS EN 120121:2007+A1:2008. These include:

  • The performance levels and safety integrity levels of safety-related parts of control systems have been specified by EN ISO 13849-1:2015 and EN 62061:2005
  • The hazards related to the break of the cutting chamber have been removed because reliable chambers represent now the state of the art (no projections have been reported from a broken cutting chamber for a long time)
  • Requirements about rotor blocking device have been modified considering the design of the drive system
  •  Hazards due to neglecting ergonomic principles have been considered
  •  The annexe for noise measurement has been revised
