What is BS EN 28749 - Pins and grooved pins about?

Grooved pins are solid pins with grooves running axially along their surface. The improved elasticity of grooved pins enables them to lock securely into holes with a wider range of diameters and greater circularity defects.

BS EN 28749 is identical to ISO 8749. BS EN 28749 focuses on pins and grooved pins. BS EN 28749 specifies the test method for shear testing of metallic pins with nominal diameters from 0,8 to 25 mm inclusive.

The shear test consists of subjecting a pin to a double shear load using a suitable test fixture in a testing machine and recording the maximum load to fracture.

Who is BS EN 28749 - Pins and grooved pins for?

BS EN 28749 on pins and grooved pins is useful for:

  • Screw Thread Tool Manufacturers
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of taper pin fasteners
  • Organizations that design, build, and maintain taper pins
  • Industries that make use of taper pins (automobiles, aircraft, shipping, railways, appliances, agriculture industry, etc.)
  • Design engineers
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Quality control personnel
  • Inspection bodies
  • Research and development team

Why should you use BS EN 28749 - Pins and grooved pins

Grooved pins are used in many applications such as locking devices, pivots, levers, or locating elements. Solid steel groove pins provide high shear strength and good wear resistance, and these pins are easy to install, with no reaming or threading required.

BS EN 28749 provides you with a test method for testing the shear strength of metallic grooved pins. EN 28749 also provides you guidance on test equipment and pin shear test fixture. BS EN 28749 guidelines help you to ensure the quality and functionality of pins and grooved pins.
