What is PD IEC/TS 61724-3-Photovoltaic system performance about?

The IEC 61724 series is a European Standard that discusses the photovoltaic system. The main objective of IEC 61724 is to specify various requirements to evaluate photovoltaic system performance.

PD IEC/TS 61724-3 is the third part of the series and a Technical Specification, defines a procedure for measuring and analyzing the energy production of a specific photovoltaic system relative to expected electrical energy production for the same system from actual weather conditions as defined by the stakeholders of the test.

The method for predicting electrical energy production is outside of the scope of this technical specification. The energy production is characterized specifically for times when the system is operating (available); times when the system is not operating (unavailable) are quantified as part of an availability metric.

Who is PD IEC/TS 61724-3-Photovoltaic system performance for?

PD IEC/TS 61724-3 on photovoltaic system performance is useful for:

  • PV module manufacturers
  • PV power system manufacturers
  • Photoelectric device manufacturers
  • Solar energy engineering industry
  • Product designers
  • Quality assurance and testing personnel

Why should you use PD IEC/TS 61724-3-Photovoltaic system performance?

A photovoltaic (PV) system is made up of one or more solar panels, an inverter, and other electrical and mechanical components that use solar energy to generate electricity.

PD IEC/TS 61724-3 provides you with a procedure for measuring and analyzing the energy production of a specific photovoltaic system relative to expected electrical energy production for the same system from actual weather conditions as defined by the stakeholders of the test.

PD IEC/TS 61724-3 can be useful for long-term performance testing of photovoltaic systems to evaluate the sustained performance of the system over the entire range of operating conditions encountered through the duration of the test.

PD IEC/TS 61724-3 provides evidence that long-term expectations of system energy production are accurate and cover all environmental effects at the site.

What’s changed since the last update?

PD IEC/TS 61724-3:2016 supersedes BS EN 61724:1998, which is withdrawn. PD IEC/TS 61724-3:2016 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 61724:1998. These include:

  • The required support cannot be obtained for the publication of an International Standard, despite repeated efforts
  • The subject is still under technical development or where, for any other reason, there is the future but no immediate possibility of an agreement on an International Standard
