What is BS EN 15199-3 about?

BS EN 15199-3 describes a method for the determination of the boiling range distribution of petroleum products by capillary gas chromatography using flame ionization detection. Two procedures are described: single and dual analysis mode.

  • Single analysis mode) determines the boiling range through C100 or C120 in a  single analysis
  • Dual analysis mode) combines procedure A with the boiling point distribution from C1 up to C9 using the Detailed Hydrocarbon Analysis (DHA).

The results of both analyses are merged into one boiling point distribution.

Note: BS EN 15199-3 is applicable to crude oils. The boiling range distribution and recovery to C100 or C120 can be determined.

Who is BS EN 15199-3 for?

BS EN 15199-3 on determining the boiling range distribution by gas for crude oil is beneficial for:

  • Maritime organizations
  • Manufacturers of crude oil
  • Petroleum refining industries
  • Quality control laboratories

Why should you use BS EN 15199-3?

Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons therefore they have various boiling points. Determining the boiling point distribution range of crude oils is an important stage of the refining process.

BS EN 15199-3 provides the test procedure and operating conditions for determining the boiling range distribution of petroleum products. This will help understand the elements present in the product as well as its quantity.

BS EN 15199-3 will guide in understanding the quality of the crude oil.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 15199-3:2020 supersedes BS EN 151993:2008, which is withdrawn.

The main changes in this edition are:

  • The algorithm for merging the results of the light end analysis and the simulated distillation analysis has been added as an informative annex
  • Additional information on the determination of the IBP and FBP is added to help the user to improve the test results
