What is BS EN 16896 - Determination of kinematic viscosity — Method by Stabinger type viscosimeter about?

BS EN 16896 specifies a procedure for the determination of kinematic viscosity (ν) at 40 °C in the range from 2 mm2/s to 6 mm2/s by calculation from dynamic viscosity (η) and density (ρ) of middle distillate fuels, fatty acid methyl ester fuels (FAME) and mixtures of these using the Stabinger type viscosimeter.

The result obtained using the procedure described in BS EN 16896 depends on the behaviour of the sample. BS EN 16896 should be used predominantly on liquids whose shear stress and shear rate are proportional (Newtonian flow behaviour). However, if the viscosity changes significantly with the shear rate, comparison with other measuring methods is only permissible at similar shear rates.

Who is BS EN 16896 - Determination of kinematic viscosity — Method by Stabinger type viscosimeter for?

BS EN 16896 on determination of kinematic viscosity — Method by Stabinger type viscosimeter is useful for:

  • Petroleum industry
  • Testing houses and laboratories
  • FAME fuels industry

Why should you use BS EN 16896 - Determination of kinematic viscosity — Method by Stabinger type viscosimeter?

Kinematic viscosity is an important property of fuel that has a direct impact on the quality of atomization and the size of the fuel droplet in the spray.

Low viscosity fuel can cause leaks in the fuel system, while high viscosity fuel can disrupt the fuel flow rate during the intake stroke, delaying the mixing of air and fuel in the combustion chamber. Therefore, determining kinematic viscosity is necessary for the efficient functioning of combustion chambers.

BS EN 16896 provides guidance on determination of kinematic viscosity (ν) using Stabinger type viscosimeter, which helps you ensure accuracy and precision of results.
