What is ISO 11007‑1 standard about?
ISO 11007‑1 is the first part of the ISO 11007 multi-series. ISO 11007‑1 specifies a method for the determination of the rust prevention characteristics of lubricating grease under dynamic wet conditions. This test method is commonly known as Emcor test in the industry.
This test method is used to assess the ability of a grease to prevent corrosion in rolling bearings operated in presence of water, synthetic seawater or any industrial aqueous pollutant.
Note 1: For ISO 11007‑1, the term “% (m/m)” is used to represent the mass fraction.
Note 2: A rolling bearing grease may be not suitable to lubricate plain bearings or gears.
Who is ISO 11007‑1 standard for?
ISO 11007‑1 on rust-prevention characteristics of lubricating greases is relevent:
- Manufacturer of lubricating greases
- Grease and petroleum industry
- Mechanical engineers
Why should you use ISO 11007‑1 standard?
Lubricating grease is used for the protection of metals from corrosion and protect them from heat produced between two mechanical parts due to friction. The purpose of the Emcor test is to measure the ability of a grease to protect a bearing against corrosion even in the presence of water.
ISO 11007‑1 specifies a method to evaculate lubricating grease for corrosion protection in dynamic wet conditions.
Under ISO 11007-1, a test portion of grease is run in a specialized and carefully cleaned test rig under specified conditions, after introduction of an aqueous test fluid, for a period of approximately a week with a predetermined sequence of running and stopping. At the end of the test period, the apparatus is dismantled and the condition of the outer ring track of the bearing is examined and rated according to the degree of corrosion. The rating ranges from 0 to 5, 0 being denoted for no corrosion and 5 denoting areas of corrosion covering more than 10 % of the surface.
Moreover, ISO 11007-1 provides guidance on test apparatus, reagents, washing temperature to efficiently conduct the Emcor test.
As the buyer of ISO 11007‑1, you can be ensured of the corrosion resistance property of the lubricating grease and minimize the risk of damage of rusting of rolling bearings or any other metal products. With ISO 110071, you will be able to scale your business with globally accepted guidelines that ensure the safety and protection of the end-user while also extending the life of metal products.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 11007‑1:2021 together with ISO/TS 11007‑2, cancels and replaces ISO 11007:1997, which has been technically revised.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- The document has been divided into two parts: part 1 on dynamic wet conditions and part 2 specifying the method with water wash-out
- Other water types and user-specified solutions have been introduced to the test procedure
