What is ISO 3015 on Cloud point for petroleum products about?

ISO 3015 is a standard that serves method to determine the cloud point of petroleum and related products from natural or synthetic sources which enables you to ensure the structural integrity of petroleum products that are susceptible to temperature changes.

ISO 3015 specifies a method for the determination of the cloud point of petroleum products which are transparent in layers 40 mm in thickness and have a cloud point below 49 °C, amongst which are diesel fuels with up to 30 % (V/V) of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME)[2], paraffinic diesel fuels with up to 7 % (V/V) FAME[3], 100 % FAME[5] and lubricants.

Note: In ISO 3015, the term “% (V/V)” is used to represent the volume fraction (φ) of a material.

Who is ISO 3015 on Cloud point for petroleum products for?

ISO 3015 on Cloud point for petroleum products is applicable to:

  • Manufacturers of petroleum products
  • Dealers and importers of petroleum products
  • Laboratories testing on petroleum products
  • Quality inspection personnel

Why should you use ISO 3015 on Cloud point for petroleum products?

The temperature at which wax in diesel or biowax in biodiesels produces a foggy look is referred to as the cloud point in the petroleum industry. Solidified wax thickens the oil and clogs the fuel filters and injectors of engines.

ISO 3015 provides you guidance on principle, reagents, materials, apparatus, sampling, sample preparation, procedure, results and test report which enables you to accurately determine the cloud point of petroleum products.

Guidance in ISO 3015 enables you to to prevent formation of crystals in petroleum products due to cold temperatures which renders them ineffective.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 3015:2019 supersedes BS EN 23015:1994, which is now withdrawn.

Changes in BS EN ISO 3015:2019 include -

  • Extension of the scope to diesel fuels with up to 30 % (V/V) FAME and inclusion of paraffinic diesel fuels
  • Inclusion of digital contact thermometer
  • Normative references in Clause 2 have been updated
  • Precision for 'other products' has been removed as data to support it could not be obtained for comparison
  • A bibliography has been added
