What is ISO 14935-Determination of wick flame persistence of fire-resistant fluids about?

ISO 14935 specifies a method for the assessment of the persistence of a flame applied to the edge of a wick of non-flammable material immersed in the fire-resistant fluid.

ISO 14935 specifies one of four basic tests for determining flammability.

NOTE 1: This test does not determine the behaviour of a spray of fire-resistant fluid.

NOTE 2: ISO 14935 does not apply to certain liquids such as HFAE and HFAS liquids.

Who is ISO 14935-Determination of wick flame persistence of fire-resistant fluids for?

ISO 14935 on determining the wick flame persistence of fire-resistant fluids is beneficial for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of hydraulic oil and other working fluids
  • Testing authorities
  • Hydrographic surveyors

Why should you use ISO 14935-Determination of wick flame persistence of fire-resistant fluids?

Petroleum products are mixtures derived from crude oil and have the same physical and chemical properties.

The test methodology laid down in ISO 14935 is about the specifications of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids. ISO 14935 defines the minimum requirements for unused flame-retardant and less flammable hydraulic fluids for hydrostatic and hydrodynamic systems in general industrial applications. ISO 14935 assists the user with flame mean persistence. It is the persistence for each of the five different periods of application of the igniting flame calculated as the average of the six determinations. ISO 14935 also provides cleaning materials for cleaning the reservoir which consists of solvents appropriate to the material being tested.

‍Overall, ISO 14935 is helpful as it provides guidance on the reagents and materials, apparatus, samples and sampling, the entire procedure and calculation which can be of good help.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 14935:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 14935:1999, which is withdrawn.

BS EN ISO 14935:2020 cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 14935:1998), which has been technically revised. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

  • Material data of the reservoir have been changed
  • Some designations have been changed
  • Drawings have been revised
  • Tolerances in the ignition and dropping times and nozzle dimensions have been tightened for better accuracy
