What is ISO 12830 on Determining acid-soluble elements about? 

ISO 12830 is an international multi-series standard that covers guidelines for paper, board, pulps, and cellulose nanomaterials.  

ISO 12830 specifies the procedure for the determination of acid-soluble magnesium, calcium, manganese, iron, copper, sodium, and potassium by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry (ICP/ES). 

ISO 12830 specifies technicalities like terms, test principle, reagents and materials used, apparatus and equipment for test, sampling, test procedure, calibrations solution- measurement consideration, blank solution, determination, and expression of results for determining acid-soluble elements. 

In cases where the residue is completely soluble, the result obtained by the procedure specified in ISO 12830 is a measure of the total amount of each element in the sample. 

Note: ISO 12830 is applicable to all types of paper, board, pulps, and cellulose nanomaterials.

The acid-soluble element comprises the acid-soluble part of the cremated residue, i.e., that part of the ignition residue obtained after cremation which is soluble in hydrochloric acid or nitric acid. 

ISO 12830 gives you test procedures for determining the acid-soluble elements in the paper, board, pulps, and cellulose nanomaterials. This helps you understand and calculate the amount of added element constituents from the result. The concentration of each element in the test solution is determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) or Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Spectroscopy /ES techniques. 

It becomes feasible for users of ISO 12830 to investigate all the acid-soluble elements in a standardized way, as it combines the determination of the acid-soluble part of magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), sodium (Na) and potassium (K) into a single document.  

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS ISO 12830:2019 supersedes BS ISO 12830:2011, which is withdrawn. BS ISO 12830:2019 includes the following changes: 

  • Scope revised to cover cellulose nanomaterials instead of only paper, board, and pulps 
  • A definition of cellulose nanomaterial, along with additional instructions for sampling, sample preparation, and incineration for cellulose nanomaterials have been incorporated 
  • Additional instructions are given on how to express results when an element is not detected
