What is ISO 6587 about?

ISO 6587 is a standard that serves technical specifications for the determination of conductivity of aqueous extracts for paper, board and pulps that is used to assess the effectiveness of washing and facilitate preventive action in case of chemical buildup.

ISO 6587 specifies a method for the determination for the conductivity of aqueous extracts of paper, board or pulp, these extracts having been prepared by a hot or cold method.

ISO 6587 provides you information on reagents, apparatus, sampling and sample preparation, the procedure for determination of cell constant and conductivity, calculation and expression of results for paper, board and pulps.

Note: ISO 6587 is applicable to all kinds of paper, board and pulps, except for paper used for electrical purposes.

Who is ISO 6587 for?

ISO 6587 on the determination of conductivity of aqueous extracts for paper, board and pulps applies to:

  • Paper manufacturers and paper mills owners
  • Testing laboratories/ test providers for paper, board, pulps

Why should you use ISO 6587?

Conductivity measurement of aqueous extracts provides an indication of the level of residual ionic impurities in the pulp.

ISO 6587 provides you with detailed information about taking specimens and test procedures for measuring the conductivity of the extract at various temperatures, with various reagents that allow you to assess the impurities in paper, board and pulps.

ISO 6587 gives you simplified methods for calculating and expressing the results which prove very helpful in assessing the effectiveness of washing and taking preventive actions against chemical buildup in the pulp and paper manufacturing process.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS ISO 6587:2021 supersedes BS 2924-2:1992, which is now withdrawn.

Changes in BS ISO 6587:2021 include –

  • Editorial updates
  • Requirements added to sampling of paper and board
  • Bibliography update
