What is ISO 9198 about?

ISO 9198 is an international standard that lays out technical specifications for the determination of water-soluble sulfates in the paper, board and pulp.

ISO 9198 specifies a method for the determination of water-soluble sulfates in all types of pulp, paper and board. The lower limit of the determination is 20 mg of sulfate ion per kilogram of dry sample.

Who is ISO 9198 for?

ISO 9198 on determining water-soluble sulfates in paper, board and pulp is applicable to:

  • Paper mills and manufacturers
  • Distributors, dealers and importers of paper, board and pulp
  • Quality control personnel
  • Testing labs for paper, board and pulp

Why should you use ISO 9198?

Paper and pulp containing a higher effective sulfur ratio have higher strength as sulfur ratio determines the strength of the paper. But the by-products containing sulfur compounds are the primary cause of the putrid air emissions in the production of paper and pulp.

ISO 9198 provides you guidance for all technical specifications such as principle, reagents, apparatus, sampling and preparation of the sample, procedure, calculation, precision and test report allowing you to determine the quantity of water-soluble sulfates in paper pulps accurately for quality assessment purposes.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS ISO 9198:2020 supersedes BS ISO 9198:2001, which is now withdrawn. Change in BS ISO 9198:2020 includes - in 6.4, the addition of the option of filtering the suspension through a medium coarseness filter paper prior to withdrawing an aliquot with a syringe.
