What is ISO 5647 about?  

ISO 5647 is an international standard that covers specifications for quality paper and paperboard.  

ISO 5647 specifies a method for determining titanium dioxide content in all kinds of paper and board, in particular coated, or filled products. It comprises two procedures for the final determination of titanium, one of them relying on spectrophotometry and the other on flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry.  

ISO 5647 gives technical specifications for terms, the principle, reagents, apparatus, selection of the sample, preparation of ash solution, reagent blank solution, spectrophotometric procedure, flame atomic absorption spectrophotometric procedure, expression of results, etc., for determination of titanium dioxide content. 

Note: The method is designed for the determination of titanium dioxide. Titanium present in other forms, for example as a constituent of clay, will not interfere in the determination.

Why should you use ISO 5647? 

Titanium dioxide content is used in the paper and paperboard industry mainly because it provides opacity, brightness, adhesion, optical brightness coefficient, and abrasion in the paper. 

ISO 5647 gives you test methods to determine the titanium dioxide by ashing the sample and dissolution of the ash in sulphuric acid and ammonium sulphate. It further determines the titanium by spectrophotometry, applying hydrogen peroxide, or by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and adding potassium chloride. 

ISO 5647 provides you with the determination of titanium, after ashing the sample and dissolution of the ash, which can also be done by ICP/AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma/Atomic Emission Spectrometry), on paper and board which helps to record the result. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS ISO 5647:2019 supersedes BS 7427:1991, which is withdrawn. This includes the option of using Inductively Coupled Plasma/Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP/AES).
