What is ISO 28199-3 about?
ISO 28199 discusses paints and varnishes. ISO 28199-3 is the third part of multi-series ISO 28199-3 and discusses assessment of sagging, formation of bubbles, pin holing and hiding power. ISO 28199-3 specifies visual methods for the assessment of tendency to sagging, formation of bubbles, pin holing and hiding power of coating materials applied to a test panel under defined conditions, using a spray application process. Assessment using measuring techniques is also described for all evaluations.

Why should you use ISO 28199-3?
The coating materials used are adapted to the specific application equipment and settings of the user. A coating material is, therefore, to be understood as a semi-manufactured product that only achieves its final form in combination with the specific application conditions. The properties to be evaluated for coating materials and coatings depend on the film thickness, so a coating system of increasing or constant thickness is applied to one or more test panels under defined conditions depending on the surface properties to be tested.
ISO 28199-3 will help you to determine colour stability or colour evaluation, process hiding power, redissolving, overspray absorption, wetting, surface texture and mottling. The surface texture can be measured both independently of the film thickness and a constant film thickness. Mottling is preferably measured at constant film thickness. Tendency to sagging, formation of bubbles, pin holing and hiding power.

What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 28199-3:2021 supersedes BS EN ISO 28199-3:2009, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 281993:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 28199-3:2009. These include:
- Assessment using measuring techniques was added for all evaluations
- 3-D photographs and the associated profiles have been included for bubbles and pinholes
- Process hiding power was changed to hiding power
- the terms bubble formation limit and cratering have been moved from ISO 281991 to ISO 28199-3
- The normative references have been updated and the document has been editorially revised
