What is ISO 2812-2 about?

ISO 2812 discusses paints and varnishes. ISO 2812-2 is the second part of the ISO 2812 multi-series and discusses the resistance of coating materials to liquids. Other than the sun and wind, rain and snow can also affect exterior paints of structures. The water resistance of coatings determines the durability of coatings in exterior conditions.

ISO 2812-2 specifies the water immersion method for paints. This determines the resistance of an individual-layer or multi-layer system of coating materials to the effects of water by partial or full immersion.

Who is ISO 2812-2  for?

ISO 2812-2 on paints and varnishes (determination of resistance to liquids) is useful for:

  • Paint manufacturers
  • Quality control personnel
  • Product development personnel
  • Research and development teams

Why should you use ISO 2812-2

Water can cause the degradation of coatings, so determination coating resistance to water is helpful in predicting its service life. ISO 2812-2 provides a method for determining the resistance of an individual-layer or multi-layer system of coating materials to the effects of water by partial or full immersion.

This water immersion method for paints described in ISO 2812-2 enables the determination of the effects of water on the coating and, if necessary, the assessment of the damage to the substrate. ISO 2812-2 helps you manufacture high-quality paint coatings that have good resistance to water and improved service life.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 2812-2:2018 supersedes BS EN ISO 2812-2:2007, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 2812-2:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN ISO 2812-2:2007. These include:

  • The reference to tank size has been changed to be an example only
  • The angle of the support for the test panels has been changed from 15° to 20° to 0° to 20°
  • The tolerance of the water temperature has been changed from ±1 °C to ±2 °C
  • Rearranging the test panels has been amended by “if specified” because rearranging the test panels is not always required
  • A terms and definitions clause has been added
