What is BS EN 9276-Paints and varnishes about?  

BS EN 927 discusses paints and varnishes of coating materials and coating systems for exterior wood. BS EN 9276 specifies a method for determining the resistance of wood coatings to artificial weathering performed in an apparatus equipped with fluorescent UV lamps, condensation, and water spray devices.

Why should you use BS EN 9276-Paints and varnishes 

One of the major disadvantages of wood is the deterioration of its surface when exposed outdoors, known as weathering. Although weathering is primarily a surface phenomenon, it is an important issue for wood products as it affects their appearance, service life, and wood-coating performance. 

In BS EN 9276 artificial weathering of coatings using fluorescent UV lamps, condensation or water spray is carried out to produce a certain radiant exposure or mutually agreed a total number of operation hours, based on a given degree of a change in a property or properties. The properties of the exposed coatings are compared with those of unexposed coatings, which are prepared from the same coating materials under identical conditions or with coatings whose degradation properties are known. Radiation, temperature, and humidity all contribute to the ageing process. Therefore, the apparatus specified in BS EN 9276 simulates all three factors. 

The results obtained by the method in BS EN 9276 do not necessarily directly relate to the results obtained under natural exposure conditions. The relationship between these results needs to be established before the method can be used to predict performance. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS EN 9276:2018 supersedes BS EN 9276:2006, which is withdrawn. BS EN 9276:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 9276:2006. These include: 

  • Update of Normative references 
  • Introduction of a new clause on precision (8) 
  • New informative Annex G for the determination of the adhesive strength of the tape on the test surface
